Top Republican lawmakers are avoiding questions about former President Donald Trump’s vow to “purge” his political opponents in a Veterans’ Day message where he labeled them as “vermin”.
When asked about Trump’s comments, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) referenced a similar comment made by Hillary Clinton and said, “Real Hitlers are called Hamas,” as Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) added his own perspective.
Trump, a frontrunner for the Republican nomination, made his statement on social media platform Truth Social, vowing to take action against the political factions within the country. Critics have compared his language to that of dictators such as Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini.
Responding to the situation, former Rep. Liz Cheney drew comparisons to Nazi Germany and questioned the Republican National Committee Chairwoman’s responses. Meanwhile, Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) recently suspended his presidential campaign, signaling the strength of Trump’s influence within the GOP.
With the Iowa caucuses approaching, it remains uncertain whether anyone could stop Trump from becoming the party’s nominee again, despite concerns about his leadership.
“He’s very clearly completely in charge of the party, and they’re not going to put up a fight no matter how reckless or irresponsible he gets,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said. “His second term would be dystopian, it just would. All the stuff he wanted to do but didn’t get away with because he had a handful of semi-responsible people around him.”
