This shift in polling data has caused some Republicans to acknowledge Trump’s growing strength and admit that it seems likely he will secure the nomination.
Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, who previously doubted Trump’s general election prospects, noted that the latest polls have eroded the argument against Trump’s electability. He suggested that it would take an “existential development” to prevent Trump from becoming the nominee. This sentiment is being echoed by other prominent Republicans, such as Sen. John Cornyn and Sen. Tim Scott.
Despite Trump’s legal troubles and controversies, Republican voters are increasingly prioritizing his ability to defeat Biden in the general election. The Des Moines Register/NBC News/Mediacom Iowa Poll revealed that electability is the top quality Republicans are looking for in a candidate, and yet Trump continues to lead in the polls.
Even Republican leaders who previously criticized Trump’s electability are now acknowledging his growing dominance. Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa predicted that Trump is likely to carry the Iowa caucuses, and other senators, including Sen. John Barrasso and Sen. Bill Cassidy, have expressed support for Trump’s nomination. This shift has caused concern among Democrats and is prompting a reevaluation of the primary race among many Republicans.
It’s not only that Trump is polling ahead of his Republican challengers; his support is also more intense and appeals to first-time caucusgoers and independents. Furthermore, despite various controversies and criticisms, Trump’s lead in national and early state polls has consistently expanded over the course of his primary campaign.
The anti-Trump messaging and attacks focused on his “baggage” have had minimal impact on his Republican supporters, according to recent polling. Even controversies such as his comments about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Hezbollah military group are being brushed aside by his base.
