Mets to Hire Yankees Coach Carlos Mendoza as New Manager: Sources Confirm

The New York Mets have named Carlos Mendoza as their new manager, sources informed ESPN on Monday.

At 43 years old, Mendoza joins the Mets after serving 15 years with the Yankees in various capacities, including a stint as manager in the low minor leagues from 2011-12, and as Aaron Boone’s bench coach for the past four seasons.

The Mets had shown interest in Craig Counsell, but when he opted to leave the Brewers for the Chicago Cubs, the team swiftly secured Mendoza, who had also interviewed for managerial positions with Cleveland and San Diego.

A former minor league player for over a decade, Mendoza transitioned into coaching with the Yankees, impressing the organization with his deep understanding of the game and his ability to mentor players. He joined the major league staff in 2018 and became Boone’s right-hand man, a role he also fulfilled for Team Venezuela in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

Mendoza takes over from Buck Showalter, who was dismissed after a disappointing season that saw the Mets’ high expectations result in a 75-87 record, despite boasting the largest payroll in the history of the sport. With a new president of baseball operations in David Stearns, the Mets retain several key players such as Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo, Kodai Senga, and Edwin Diaz, and are expected to be active in free agency, pursuing players like Shohei Ohtani.

Following the high-profile hiring of Showalter before the 2022 season, the Mets have opted for a more low-key choice in Mendoza. According to sources, he made a lasting impression during the interview process.

In previous years, Mendoza had interviewed for managerial roles in Detroit (eventually filled by A.J. Hinch), Boston (Alex Cora), and Chicago (Pedro Grifol). Now, he finds himself in arguably one of the most coveted managerial positions in the big leagues as the Mets aspire to maintain one of the highest payrolls in baseball under owner Steve Cohen and seek their first championship since 1986.

However, it is a position that has recently seen a high turnover rate, with the Mets’ last three managers — Showalter, Luis Rojas, and Mickey Callaway — all being relieved of their duties after just two years.
