The 20th Century Studios franchise is making a comeback with its newest chapter, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” set to premiere on May 24, 2024. This film takes place several years after the events of “War for the Planet of the Apes” and follows a new generation of apes who now rule over humans. As a tyrannical ape builds his empire, a young ape must make choices that will shape the future for both species.
The cast includes Owen Teague, Kevin Durand, Freya Allen, William H. Macy, and Peter Macon. Directed by Wes Ball, known for “The Maze Runner” trilogy, the screenplay is written by Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Patrick Aison. The film was produced by Jaffa, Silver, Joe Hartwick Jr., and Jason Reed, with Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping serving as executive producers.
Filming for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” took place in Sydney from October 2022 to February 2023. Wes Ball shared a behind-the-scenes clip from the set to announce the wrap of production.
Based on the novel by Pierre Boulle, the “Planet of the Apes” franchise has grossed over $1.7 billion worldwide. It originated with a series of six films between 1968 and 2001 and was later rebooted with “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” in 2011, followed by “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” in 2014 and “War for the Planet of the Apes” in 2017. After Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, they announced plans for more films in the franchise.
