A widower confessed to the police that “sometimes you have to do what you have to do” after he fatally shot his daughter’s ex-partner and the ex-partner’s father following a custody battle involving their grandson. Stephen Alderton, a 67-year-old man, had previously stated in text messages that he would “override any court decision” and had a “plan B” before committing the murders. The Cambridge Crown Court sentenced Alderton to life in prison with a minimum term of 25 years.
The prosecutor, Peter Gair, revealed that Alderton used a Beretta shotgun to kill 32-year-old Joshua Dunmore and his 57-year-old father, Gary, on March 29, just two days after a family court hearing. Alderton pleaded guilty to both murders and was apprehended by armed officers on a motorway a few hours later.
Alderton justified his actions to the police, emphasizing that sometimes one has to do what they believe is right, even if it conflicts with the law. The motive for the killings was the ongoing family court case between Alderton’s daughter Samantha Stephen and Joshua Dunmore. The case involved a request to relocate their seven-year-old child to the United States. The court ultimately denied the request.
