As the NBA preseason wraps up for the Warriors, they face a significant challenge – improving their defense. Despite some smooth aspects during training camp, their defensive shortcomings have become apparent. They will need to make significant repairs in order to compete for a championship.
Game 1 of the regular season is only two days away, and Klay Thompson is confident that their defensive effort will be considerably better on opening night. However, Coach Steve Kerr remains cautious, emphasizing the need for consistency and improvement.
The preseason exposed the Warriors’ inconsistency on defense, resulting in a 108.7 rating that ranked 22nd in the league. The absence of Draymond Green, combined with sloppy habits on the court, contributed to this defensive struggle.
Draymond Green, a renowned defender and eight-time All-Defensive team selection, can significantly impact the Warriors’ defense. While Green may be available for the season opener, his return will undoubtedly improve the team’s overall performance.
Turnovers were a significant issue for the Warriors during the preseason, averaging 17.6 per game. Opponents capitalized on these turnovers, scoring an alarming 21 points per game. Green admitted that he and Stephen Curry were primarily responsible for the turnovers, but having low-turnover player Chris Paul on the team should help mitigate this problem.
However, the team’s defensive issues extend beyond turnovers. The Warriors struggled in the half-court defense, often experiencing breakdowns and committing reach fouls. To address these challenges, effective communication is key.
Draymond Green singled out Kevon Looney, emphasizing the importance of his vocal leadership on the court. Green wants Looney to follow in the footsteps of former Warrior Andrew Bogut by recognizing opposing team strategies, organizing traffic, and communicating conditions to his teammates.
While the Warriors believe these defensive issues are fixable, the timeline for improvement remains uncertain. As they head into the regular season, they are aware of the work ahead to become a formidable defensive team.
