The 100th anniversary of Memorial Stadium witnessed an intense showdown. In the opening minutes of the game, Nebraska faced a disastrous situation against Northwestern. Their first two drives resulted in consecutive interceptions, granting the Wildcats excellent field position. However, Nebraska rallied and successfully defended against Northwestern when it mattered most, securing a thrilling 17-9 victory in 2023.
Heinrich Haarberg faced a shaky start with two interceptions, but he displayed tremendous composure for the rest of the game, avoiding any costly errors. Haarberg completed eight passes out of 17 attempts for 85 yards and a touchdown. Additionally, he contributed 72 rushing yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Emmett Johnson led the Huskers in rushing yards during this triumph, accumulating 73 yards from 12 carries.
Although Northwestern boasted more total offensive yards than Nebraska, the Huskers’ defense limited the Wildcats to a mere nine points. The Blackshirts exerted immense pressure, amassing a total of eight sacks throughout the game.
However, Nebraska faced difficulties in converting their opportunities into points. Nevertheless, each time Nebraska found the end zone, it made a significant impact. Haarberg’s rushing touchdown handed the Huskers the lead, and his 44-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Coleman further extended their advantage to 17-6.
With this win, Nebraska improves to a 4-3 record. The last time the Huskers reached four wins before the season’s final game was in 2019 when they defeated Northwestern 13-10 to achieve a 4-2 outcome. Next Saturday, Nebraska will continue their campaign at home against Purdue, with kickoff scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and the game televised on FS1.
