On October 21st, a shocking incident took place outside a West Side truck stop, where a man allegedly murdered his girlfriend and subsequently reported it as a possible overdose. The accused, Julius Irving, 29, has been charged with an open count of murder. To respect the privacy of the victim’s family, her identity is being withheld until it can be confirmed whether they have been notified.
Following his arrest, Irving has been taken into custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center. It remains unclear if he has legal representation to defend his case.
The incident came to the attention of Bernalillo County deputies at approximately 10:15 p.m. that night. They received a call regarding a “possible overdose” in the vicinity of the 500 block of Atrisco Vista NW, a location near Interstate 40 and a truck stop. According to the criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court, deputies found Irving desperately attempting CPR on his girlfriend next to a car. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initially, Irving claimed that he and his girlfriend had been drinking in the car, and he had passed out. When he regained consciousness, he discovered his girlfriend lying lifeless by the vehicle. However, during the investigation, the medical examiner observed evidence suggesting that the victim had been strangled. Additionally, Irving displayed defensive scratches on his arms. Surprisingly, when deputies were about to collect DNA samples from him, Irving suddenly recollected the events.
According to Irving’s revised statement, the couple had engaged in a heated argument, which escalated to the point where his girlfriend bit his finger. In response, he admitted to choking her until she ceased to move, outside the confines of the car. Subsequently, Irving returned to the vehicle and fell asleep. When questioned about the details of the argument, Irving struggled to recall the specifics but acknowledged that he had held his girlfriend for too long.
