Jake Tapper Exposes House GOP’s Disrespectful Treatment of Speaker’s Gavel: An Eye-opening Lesson

Jake Tapper strongly criticized House Republicans and offered them advice as they continue to struggle in their search for a new speaker after Rep. Jim Jordan failed in his third attempt to become the House Speaker.

“The country desperately needs a speaker. This is not a popularity contest, we need a functional legislative branch,” stated the CNN host during an interview with Rep. Steve Womack (R-Ark.) on “The Lead.”

Tapper’s remarks coincided with Republicans going back to the drawing board after Jordan’s hopes for the position went up in smoke in a leaderless House.

Republicans have been unable to unite behind a candidate who can garner the necessary 217 votes from the 221-member House GOP conference to secure the Speaker role, following the ousting of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy earlier this month.

During the interview, Tapper proposed ranked choice voting as a way for the party to find a “compromise candidate,” which Womack criticized fellow Republicans for their behavior in the speaker fight.

Tapper responded, “I understand, but you know what? None of us out here care. It’s just like, get over it,” and likened a social media fight between Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) and Rep. Greg Murphy (R-N.C.) to high school drama.

Womack replied, “That’s even offensive to high school students, because it’s really junior high stuff.”
