SAN JOSE, Calif. – Johnny Beecher had a night to remember on Thursday in San Jose.
The young center earned his first career point with an assist on Brad Marchand’s goal, helping the Boston Bruins secure a 3-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center.
“Getting my first point is really special, especially assisting one of the top-20 Bruins of all time like Brad. It’s something I can share with my kids one day,” Beecher said.
In the first period, Beecher filled in for Derek Forbort near the blue line and passed the puck to Marchand at the top of the left-wing circle. Marchand then took a step towards the net and scored with a wrist shot over San Jose goalie Kaapo Kahkonen’s glove, giving Boston a 1-0 lead with 1:54 remaining.
“I just hopped on the ice,” Beecher explained. “[Matt Poitras] made an incredible play to enter the zone, and then he made an unselfish play to change as they entered the offensive zone. I just went out there to cover for the defense, and when the puck is on number 63’s stick, good things happen.
“I’m glad to have my first point and even happier to help the team win.”
Beecher also played a significant role on the penalty kill, spending 1:52 of his 11:22 ice time against the Sharks in that situation. At one point, his stick work created a turnover, and he sent the puck to Marchand for a shorthanded breakaway opportunity.
“Playing on the penalty kill is crucial for me. It’s how I’ll make it in this league and establish myself,” Beecher emphasized. “I take a lot of pride in playing a 200-foot game and contributing to our team in that aspect. Our penalty kill has been solid lately, and I hope we can keep up the momentum.”
“It’s a big confidence boost to know that the coaching staff trusts me in that role. I put a lot of pressure on myself to get the job done. This league can humble you quickly, so it’s important to pay attention to the details and execute properly. It feels amazing to contribute in that way.”
