Jawando Withdraws from Maryland Senate Race: Discover the Latest Updates

Montgomery County Council Member Will Jawando (D) dropped out of Maryland’s competitive U.S. Senate race Thursday, narrowing the Democratic field for the rare, open seat to a battle largely between Rep. David Trone and Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks.

Jawando posted a lackluster fundraising quarter on Sunday, trailing behind Alsobrooks, who has shored up support from many of Maryland’s top Democrats. Trone has put nearly $10 million of his personal fortune behind his campaign so far.

“And because I have so much respect for my loyal supporters, my constituents in Montgomery County, and my loving wife and children, I cannot remain in a race I do not believe I can win,” Jawando said in a statement.

Political analysts viewed Jawando’s candidacy as a long shot against better positioned rivals, but the second-term councilman cast his bid as a way to consolidate Maryland’s influential liberal wing. He noted he now represents 1 million of the state’s roughly 6 million residents and vowed he would have the resources to win.
