A 32-year-old man from Laguna Hills was taken into custody on Tuesday for the shooting of a security guard in the Nellie Gail Ranch neighborhood.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. on Tuesday near Bridlewood Drive and Saddlerock Place in Laguna Hills. The security guard, who was on duty at the time, was found in his security vehicle with gunshot wounds to his upper torso.
As of Wednesday, the security guard remains in critical condition after being hospitalized, according to Orange County Sheriff’s Sgt. Mike Woodroof.
Matthew Luke Pickens, the suspect, peacefully surrendered to deputies at his residence, which was surrounded by law enforcement personnel. The 32-year-old man has been arrested and is facing charges of attempted murder.
Law enforcement officials also confiscated multiple firearms from Pickens’ home and vehicle. These weapons will undergo analysis to determine if any of them were used in the shooting, as stated in a press release by the Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities have not disclosed any further details regarding the motive or circumstances of the shooting at this time.
The security guard is employed by 24-Hour Mobile Patrol and was the sole security officer on duty during the incident, according to Brian Mitchell, the general manager of the Nellie Gail Ranch Homeowner’s Association.
