An Orange County firefighter has been indicted in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident involving a pedestrian in Dana Point. The announcement was made by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday.
Jeffrey Richard Grasinger, a 36-year-old resident of Rancho Santa Margarita, was indicted last week. However, it was on Tuesday that officials revealed that he is facing a felony charge of hit-and-run with permanent and serious injury. If convicted during the trial, he could be sentenced to up to four years in prison.
Grasinger, a 13-year veteran of the Orange County Fire Authority, is set to be arraigned on November 17 at the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana.
The incident in question involved the death of 24-year-old Said Darinel Sanchez, which occurred on October 21. According to prosecutors, Grasinger struck Sanchez at around 6:45 p.m. as the victim was crossing Pacific Coast Highway. This resulted in Sanchez being thrown into the air, spinning, and landing head-first on the pavement. Grasinger did not stop to provide any assistance.
Authorities from the Sheriff’s office were able to trace the vehicle involved to a residence in Rancho Santa Margarita. There, they discovered blood on the front of the vehicle, which had sustained damage from the collision.
The Orange County Fire Authority declined to comment on the case.
Grasinger’s attorney, Paul Meyer, stated, “Mr. Grasinger has been a dedicated firefighter for 13 years and has risked his life many times to save countless citizens. He is not guilty of the charges.”
