Following a weekend filled with lobbying and GOP pressure, Representative Jim Jordan has gained some support for his speakership bid. However, he still falls short of the 217 Republicans needed to secure his position. Representatives Mike Rogers, Ken Calvert, Vern Buchanan, and Ann Wagner have all switched their votes to Jordan, as reported by CNN. Wagner, who was previously against Jordan, said he was able to reassure her on several key issues, such as maintaining the functioning of the government. Jordan is aiming for a floor vote on Tuesday at noon ET, even if he doesn’t have enough votes lined up. He stated, “I think the only way to do this, the way the Founders intended, is you … have to vote tomorrow.” He added, “I feel good about it.”
Representative Carlos Gimenez expressed his dissatisfaction with Jordan’s pressure campaign, stating that it has succeeded with some members, according to NBC News. Gimenez emphasized that this approach would not work on him, saying, “His followers are spreading all sorts of false information about me.” He finds this strategy “disappointing but also concerning.” Gimenez confirmed that he will vote for Kevin McCarthy for the speakership. Jordan, who won the nomination from his party’s caucus but not enough votes for election in the House, can only afford to lose four GOP votes on the floor. Supporters estimate that he currently has around 10 opponents.
On Monday, Jordan sent a letter to his caucus in an attempt to address concerns about his reputation as an uncompromising hard-liner, while acknowledging the lack of unity within the party. The letter, as reported by the New York Times, stated, “The role of the speaker is to bring all Republicans together. That’s what I intend to do.” Jordan promised to involve GOP viewpoints more in important decisions. In the event that Jordan is unsuccessful in securing the speakership on the floor, GOP Representative Mike Turner stated on CBS’ Face the Nation on Sunday that a deal would have to be made with Democrats to get the House up and running again. The House has been shut down for two weeks. (Read more about Jim Jordan)’s stories.
