Kate Ferdinand’s Joyful Pumpkin Picking Adventure with Newborn Baby Shae and Family, Despite Challenging Birth Experience

Kate Ferdinand had a delightful day out pumpkin picking with her newborn daughter and family, following a recent revelation about her challenging birth. The 32-year-old former star of TOWIE, who welcomed her daughter Shae with husband Rio Ferdinand in July, disclosed that their second child was born with congenital pneumonia. In addition to caring for their two-year-old son Cree, Kate is also a stepmother to Rio’s children Lorenz, 17, Tate, 14, and Tia, 12, from his previous marriage to Rebecca Ellison, who tragically passed away from breast cancer in 2015 at the age of 34.

Kate shared photos of their family outing at Tulleys Farm in Crawley, where she was joined by her stepchildren and a friend. She opted for a casual look, sporting a khaki green hoodie with matching joggers and a bomber jacket. In one photo, Kate lovingly cradled baby Shae in her arms, while another showed her stepchildren happily collecting pumpkins. She captioned the post, “A very cute morning pumpkin picking.”

Prior to their pumpkin picking trip, Kate spoke in-depth about her challenging birth experience with daughter Shae on her podcast, Blended. She described the panic she felt when her newborn was rushed to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) just minutes after giving birth. Kate and Rio were shocked to learn that Shae was born with congenital pneumonia and Kate previously shared the hardship of spending days without her baby during the health scare.

Congenital pneumonia can cause respiratory distress within the first 24 hours of life and is often a result of an infection in the fetal fluid. Kate also opened up about balancing her responsibilities as a parent to a newborn, Cree, and her stepchildren Lorenz, Tate, and Tia.

Kate began the podcast episode by apologizing to her fans for her absence on social media as she immersed herself in the joy of her “baby bubble.” She then shared the details of her birth experience, explaining that, true to the Ferdinand family’s style, nothing went according to plan. Shae was born via a planned C-section, and although Kate felt calm leading up to the birth due to her previous emergency C-section with Cree, she experienced a sudden panic when she entered the operating theater. She had never had a panic attack before but described the feeling as similar to one.

While numb from the waist down due to the spinal anesthesia, Kate felt claustrophobic and struggled to communicate with anyone, including her husband Rio. She couldn’t understand why everyone else was happy and excited while she felt disconnected. Her panic escalated when Shae was born and didn’t cry immediately. Shae appeared cold and blue, and Kate felt detached during the moments following her daughter’s birth.

As the podcast episode continued, Kate discussed how midwives worked to improve Shae’s condition by rubbing her to increase oxygen intake, a terrifying moment for Kate. Shae was then taken to NICU, leaving Kate feeling alone and guilty as she sat in a room by herself, watching Love Island on TV. She described it as an out-of-body experience and experienced intense guilt for not focusing solely on her baby in NICU.

When her spinal anesthesia wore off, Kate was allowed to visit Shae in intensive care. She felt overwhelmed and unable to pick up her daughter, expressing a reluctance to be in the room. The experience was more difficult than being away from Shae. Kate experienced immediate guilt from the moment Shae was born due to the complexities of motherhood.

After five days in the hospital, both Kate and Shae were discharged. Kate expressed heightened neediness and a desire to keep Shae close, wanting to breastfeed more frequently and have her daughter by her side. She admitted to feeling a sense of relief when Shae was next to her during those early weeks.
