Former LASD Psychologist’s Groundbreaking Transfer Linked to Gender Discrimination Complaints – A Look Back One Year Later (October 16, 2022)

One Year Ago Today (October 16, 2022)…A former psychologist at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is taking legal action against the county and the department for alleged gender discrimination. The psychologist, Christine Jones, claims that she faced retaliation and emotional distress after complaining about the discrimination. The alleged incidents included finding a dead rat in her parking space and a deceased rabbit in her driveway.

The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, seeks unspecified damages for retaliation, gender discrimination, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

A representative from the LASD issued a statement on Sunday, stating that they have not seen the lawsuit and are unable to comment at this time.

According to the lawsuit, Jones was hired by the county in May 2007 and has extensive expertise in police psychology. She worked in the LASD’s Psychological Services Bureau until April 2020, serving as the acting director for several months. Prior to that, she was the assistant director, overseeing clinical and administrative supervision and responding to critical incidents and high-profile events.

The lawsuit alleges that in 2018, an LASD consultant, who had close ties to Sheriff Alex Villanueva and other executives, took actions to undermine Jones’ career, along with other male employees, in order to ensure male dominance in supervisory roles. The suit claims that the consultant filed numerous false complaints against Jones, most of which were closed without any wrongdoing found. The suit also states that Jones’ complaints about disparate treatment went ignored by management.

In November 2019, someone left a dead rat in Jones’ work parking spot, and a deceased rabbit was placed in her driveway at home, according to the lawsuit. As a result of the stress caused by these incidents, Jones went on medical leave in April 2020. She was later reassigned to the coroner’s office, which the suit claims has negatively impacted her career advancement as a psychologist.
