Oct. 13 (UPI) — President Joe Biden revealed a $7 billion federal investment plan in Philadelphia on Friday. The initiative aims to accelerate clean hydrogen production at seven renewable energy hubs around the country, fostering clean energy development and job creation.
“Today, I am excited to share one of the largest advanced manufacturing investments in American history. Our $7 billion federal investment will attract $40 billion in private investments towards clean hydrogen power,” stated President Biden.
President Biden emphasized the ability of federal investments to attract private sector investments, consequently promoting the growth of industries like clean energy.
“When I think about climate, I think about jobs. High-paying jobs. Union jobs,” President Biden expressed. “I want to clarify one thing about unions. Unions built the middle class. The middle class built America. Wall Street did not build the middle class.”
This statement holds particularly true within the clean energy and manufacturing sectors.
According to President Biden, these clean hydrogen hubs will generate tens of thousands of well-paying jobs, with a majority of them being union jobs.
“This is all part of my plan to manufacture products in America,” said President Biden.
As part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, this project looks to produce over three million metric tons of clean hydrogen annually while eliminating 25 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, the White House reported.
The selected hubs set to receive funding are:
The Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub, which includes Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey, receiving up to $750 million.
The Appalachian Clean Hydrogen Hub, which includes West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, eligible for up to $925 million. The Heartland Hydrogen Hub in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota also qualifies for the same amount of funding.
The Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub, encompassing Washington, Oregon, and Montana, and the Midwest Hydrogen Hub, covering Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan, both have the potential to receive up to $1 billion.
The HyVelocity Hydrogen Hub in Texas and the Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems in California could each receive up to $1.2 billion.
All of these hubs will undergo redevelopment using union labor, with employment programs established at community colleges to provide training and apprenticeships, ultimately leading to the creation of thousands of new full-time jobs, as outlined by the White House.
The broader objective of this program is to fortify U.S. energy independence and set the U.S. on a course to achieve approximately one-third of President Biden’s 2030 clean-hydrogen production goals.
By facilitating decarbonization improvements, the impact is anticipated to be comparable to removing 5.5 million gasoline-powered cars from the road, while also reducing emissions in heavy-duty transportation industries like chemicals, steel, and cement, according to the White House.
About two-thirds of the total project investment will be allocated to green hydrogen production at the different facilities. Collaboration with local governments will ensure that communities benefit from ongoing climate preservation efforts.
In recent months, efforts to combat the climate crisis have gained momentum worldwide. Hundreds of nations are accelerating carbon reduction efforts under the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, which establishes concrete goals for lowering global warming levels in the coming decade.
Prior to discussing clean energy investments, President Biden acknowledged the bravery of “two police officers,” one of whom tragically lost their life in a shooting at the Philadelphia airport on Thursday night.
He expressed gratitude and offered prayers for the officers and their families.
President Biden also touched on the situation in Israel, condemning Hamas as “pure evil” and reaffirming the unwavering support of the United States for Israel.
He emphasized the need to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and shared that his administration is working to strengthen humanitarian support.
“The vast majority of Palestinians have no connection to the appalling attacks by Hamas, and they too are suffering,” President Biden remarked. “We are working around the clock to secure the release of Americans held by Hamas.”
