Exclusive Group Rebates: Reimbursement for Tax on Menstrual Products

When purchasing menstrual products, it is advisable to keep your receipt as it may help you save money. A coalition consisting of eight manufacturers of period products has been formed, promising to refund the sales tax charged to customers in US states that do not classify these products as essential. The Tampon Tax Back Coalition, made up of brands such as August, Cora, Lola, The Honey Pot, Rael, Here We Flo, Saalt, and DIVA, strongly believes that period products are essential and should be exempt from tax. According to the coalition, “Twenty-one states still impose taxes on period products as ‘non-essential goods,’ while products like Rogaine and Viagra are considered medical necessities,” as reported by CBS News.

August, a brand that was launched in 2021 and is now available in over 400 Target stores, started offering reimbursement for sales tax to consumers who submitted their receipts earlier this year, according to co-founder Nadya Okamoto, as mentioned in CNN. The coalition’s recent initiative is an expansion of this concept. Okamoto explains, “What we are trying to convey is that [period products] should be considered as medical necessities. In many states where period products are subject to tax, it is because tampons and pads are classified as non-essential items.”

Customers who purchase menstrual products from these brands can now provide proof of purchase on tampontaxback.com. The sales tax will be refunded to their Venmo or PayPal account within 48 hours. Okamoto shares that “August is managing this process through a dedicated pool of funds contributed by each brand.” Her ultimate goal is to abolish sales tax on period products in all US states. In 2014, “the tampon tax was in effect in 40 states,” so she believes it is possible for the tax to be eliminated in the remaining 21 states as well. Texas recently became the latest state to eliminate sales tax on period products with a new legislation that took effect last month. (Read more menstruation stories.)
