An 82-year-old woman tragically lost her life after being struck by a vehicle while crossing a street in Burbank, according to the local police department.
According to Burbank Police Department spokesman Sgt. Stephen Turner, the incident occurred at around 9 a.m. on Tuesday at the intersection of West Verdugo Avenue and North Buena Vista Street. Law enforcement officers responded to reports of a collision involving a pedestrian.
Upon arriving at the scene, detectives discovered an elderly woman severely injured in the middle of the road. She was promptly transported to a nearby hospital, but sadly passed away.
Investigations revealed that the woman had entered the marked crosswalk on the south side of Verdugo Avenue and began crossing North Buena Vista Street heading westbound. It was at this point that she was struck by a Toyota Tundra pickup truck driver who was making a left turn from westbound Verdugo onto southbound Buena Vista. The deceased pedestrian has been identified as Maryland Charette of Burbank.
Sgt. Turner also confirmed that the driver of the pickup truck remained at the accident site. Further investigations have determined that neither drugs nor alcohol were contributing factors to the crash, and the driver was not believed to have been speeding.
The collision is currently under investigation, and no arrests have been made at this time.
