The Toyota Crown is a unique sedan that serves as a replacement for the Avalon while incorporating the elevated ride height commonly found in crossovers. This unconventional decision by Toyota is expected to attract older drivers who struggle with the accessibility of traditional sedans. Although it is possible that some of the 13,054 U.S. owners are under 65, it is likely a small percentage. However, the introduction of the Toyota Crown Sport may change this perception due to its visually appealing design.
Is the Toyota Crown Sport a crossover or a wagon? We won’t delve into that debate here, but we can’t deny the resemblance to the Ferrari Purosangue, and that’s definitely a positive. While it may lack a V12 engine, the standard hybrid and optional plug-in hybrid powertrains are more than satisfactory for potential buyers. Although Toyota has yet to release power figures for the Crown Sport, our experience with the 340-horsepower Platinum variant of the Crown sedan suggests that it will offer impressive performance. Surprisingly, the Crown was also enjoyable to drive, and the Crown Sport is expected to be even more agile thanks to rear-wheel steering. Although a manual transmission is absent, it’s not surprising for a Toyota hybrid to lack one. However, it would be a pleasant surprise if Toyota were to include a manual transmission option, similar to the Supra, but we’re not holding our breath. After all, it is 2023, not 1993. Nevertheless, the Crown Sport is available in vibrant colors, adding to its appeal.
However, there is unfortunate news. While Toyota is currently accepting orders for the Crown Sport in Japan, there are no apparent plans to sell it outside of Japan. Even if it were to reach Europe, it seems unlikely that it would ever make its way to the United States. This is disappointing because the Crown Sport is an absolute winner. Perhaps if we all implore our local Toyota dealers to convince Toyota to bring it to the U.S., there may be a chance of reconsideration. Photo: Toyota
Will our efforts yield results? Probably not, but it doesn’t hurt to try. And if Toyota happens to come across this, please consider gracing us with a U.S.-spec Crown Sport. It fits the crossover category that Americans adore! If Porsche can successfully sell both the Taycan Sport Turismo and Taycan Cross Turismo here, surely there is enough demand for the Crown Sport to justify its introduction. Pretty please?
