Revamped X Change Feature Restricts Users’ Ability to Block and Report Select Ads

X, formerly known as Twitter, has made a significant change to its platform, removing the ability for users to block and report certain advertisements. This development has caught the attention of users on X, who reached out to Mashable to report a new type of ad that started appearing in their “For You” feed. These ads are unique in that users cannot like or retweet them and they do not disclose themselves as ads, making it difficult for users to identify them as such. Furthermore, users are unable to block or report these ads if clicked, a feature commonly available for traditional advertisement posts.

Interestingly, the introduction of these new ads coincides with another change on the X platform. X recently updated the appearance of links posted on the platform, removing headlines and text accompanying the images. This shift aligns with X’s optimization efforts to increase time spent on the platform. In fact, X’s owner, Elon Musk, publicly advocated for publishers to share content in long form. Musk’s approach to content moderation has been met with controversy, as some argue it has led to an increase in misinformation on X. Musk found himself in a disagreement with CNN over a screenshot he posted, which featured a fabricated chyron suggesting he could threaten free speech on X. CNN’s public relations department responded, refuting the headline’s authenticity and urging Musk to “be better.”

The Hill has reached out to X for comment on these recent developments.
