- Scroll down for a behind-the-scenes look at McAlpine’s pre-show schedule.
I first met Lizzy McAlpine through a computer screen.
It was September 28, 2022, and she had just surpassed 3 million monthly listeners on Spotify. “Ceilings,” the centerpiece of her sophomore album “Five Seconds Flat,” was starting to gain traction among indie-pop fans on TikTok.
Almost exactly one year later, I had the chance to meet McAlpine in person. It was September 30, 2023, and we were backstage at All Things Go, an independent music festival near Washington, DC.
Everything and nothing had changed. Her discography remained the same; “Five Seconds Flat” is still her most recent release. However, her audience had nearly quadrupled, with over 11 million monthly listeners on Spotify. “Ceilings” had become a platinum-certified hit, amassing 350 million streams to date. Festival-goers were eagerly anticipating McAlpine’s set.
Despite the buzz of fame, McAlpine remained as kind and calm as ever. She graciously accommodated various promotional requests, filling her pre-show schedule with photoshoots and fan meetings.
“What else am I gonna do, sit around?” she remarked.
I joined McAlpine for the afternoon leading up to her final performance of the year, offering fans an exclusive behind-the-scenes glimpse into her festival day.
