Simone Biles Makes History, Becomes the Record-Breaking and Emotionally Moving Most Decorated Gymnast in America

American gymnast Simone Biles is rewriting history books. Biles returned to the sport just three months ago and is proving herself as one of the world’s top gymnasts.

On Friday, she claimed her sixth individual all-around title at the world championships, making her the most decorated gymnast of all time. Biles became emotional during the medal ceremony, attributing her tears to an unexpected factor.

“You won’t believe this, but I’ve had something in my eye for the past four hours that I can’t get out,” Biles explained. “So, whenever I looked at the podium, it really bothered my eye.”

“Because, 10 years ago, I won my first worlds. Now we’re back here. So, it was emotional,” she expressed. “It means everything to me, the fight, everything that I’ve put in to get back to this place, feel comfortable and confident enough to compete.”

Biles achieved a score of 58.399 in balance beam, floor, vault, and uneven bars, defeating the defending champion Rebeca Andrade from Brazil by 1.633 points.

This victory marked Biles’ 27th world championship medal and 21st gold. It comes just two days after she led the U.S. women to a record-breaking seventh consecutive win in the team event at the world championships.
