On Monday, there was a distressing incident involving Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar outside his residence in Washington, D.C. where he fell victim to a carjacking by three armed men. The Congressman lives just a few blocks away from the U.S. Capitol, alongside several other House members. This incident follows the earlier assault of Minnesota Rep. Angie Craig in an elevator this year.
Let me emphasize this: nobody deserves to be a victim of crime. My thoughts and prayers go out to Congressman Cuellar as he recovers from this traumatic experience. However, it’s not surprising to see Democrats facing the consequences of their lenient approach towards crime, which has become prevalent in D.C. and across the nation.
For most residents of Washington, D.C., Congressman Cuellar’s incident is just one example of the escalating crime rates that have been affecting thousands of victims in the nation’s capital. In the past year alone, carjackings have increased by 109%, robberies by 68%, theft by 22%, and homicides by 38%, marking this year as one of the deadliest in two decades for the city.
TEXAS CONGRESSMAN HENRY CUELLAR CARJACKED AT GUNPOINT IN WASHINGTON, DC
However, this issue is not unique to Washington. Cities under Democratic leadership all across the country are grappling with soaring crime rates. Nine out of the top ten cities with the highest homicide rates are governed by Democrats. During President Biden’s first year in office, at least 12 major cities, all run by Democrats, set new records for homicides.
Elected Democrats are failing to uphold their most fundamental obligation: keeping the American people safe.
Even prominent Democrats like Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman, Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek, and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul have expressed support for policies that favor criminals, such as the abolition of cash bail, reduced penalties for parole violations, and decriminalization of deadly drugs. Liberal district attorneys in cities like Los Angeles are also facing criticism for prioritizing the rights of criminals over those of victims and releasing violent offenders back into society.
Meanwhile, there have been over 6 million illegal border crossings since January 2021, resulting in a surge of illicit fentanyl, which has now become the leading cause of death among American adults. This issue affects every state, as these are only the individuals who have been apprehended – how many more have managed to escape? It’s no wonder that a majority of Americans feel less safe now than when Biden assumed office.

The increasing crime rates are impacting communities all over the country, and Democrats are failing to align with the concerns of the general public. They are not fulfilling their most basic duty of ensuring the safety of the American people. The solution is clear: elect Republicans.
The Republican Party is devoted to securing the border, reducing crime, supporting law enforcement officers, and safeguarding public safety. While President Biden fails to stand against the fringe “Defund the Police” movement within his party and hesitates to support law enforcement when it matters, Republicans are producing tangible results.
When 173 House Democrats voted against repealing Washington, D.C.’s radical law that decreased penalties for crimes like carjacking, burglary, and robbery, Republicans fought back and prevented the passage of the law.
During this Congress, House Republicans have passed bills to increase the number of border patrol agents, halt the influx of deadly fentanyl, raise wages for our military personnel, and honor our courageous law enforcement officers.

The Republican Party stands for law enforcement, border security, and public safety. As Democrats hesitate, we understand that we cannot allow crime to continue devastating our cities.
There’s a reason why defund-the-police Democrats like Reps. Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, Rashida Tlaib, and Jamaal Bowman hire private security to ensure their own safety. And if even members of Congress like Henry Cuellar aren’t safe despite the security measures in place, how secure are you?
