Arnold Schwarzenegger opens up about his aging process and confesses his dissatisfaction with his body’s appearance.
“Every day, I look in the mirror and I think to myself, ‘Wow, you really don’t look great. Look at the sagging muscles that were once firm and powerful. What the hell happened?'” the 76-year-old actor shared candidly on SiriusXM’s “The Howard Stern Show” Wednesday.
Schwarzenegger’s forthcoming book, “Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life,” includes his thoughts on looking in the mirror and feeling displeased.
He described it as “sad” because he was once celebrated for his exceptional physique, featuring defined muscles and veins. However, even though his body has changed, Schwarzenegger emphasized that he still possesses a lot of energy.
Unlike most people who have never experienced a fit physique, Schwarzenegger’s transition has been particularly challenging due to his previous status as a professional bodybuilder.
“It’s unbelievable to witness the transformation. In my younger years, I never thought this would happen. Now, my body may still look better than most, but it’s disheartening,” he explained.
Opening up about his health and fitness routine, Schwarzenegger revealed that he only eats two meals a day, breakfast and dinner. Additionally, a turning point in his perception of his body came in 1997 when he underwent heart surgery at nearly 50 years old.
“It was the first time I felt vulnerable. The doctor advised me to avoid heavy weight-lifting and be cautious of my breathing during exercise to prevent excessive strain on my heart valves,” he shared.
Schwarzenegger acknowledged the inevitable changes that come with aging and embraced them by stating, “There’s nothing I can do about it, so I take on these challenges. At 76 years old, I still possess abundant energy and enthusiasm.”
