The Los Angeles City Council has given its approval for the acquisition of a parcel of land at 16300 Foothill Blvd. in Sylmar. This land will serve as the location for a new fire station.
The motion to accept the land was introduced by Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez, who represents the 7th District. The council unanimously voted in favor of the motion. The Department of General Services and the Bureau of Engineering have been instructed to accept the land and provide a report within 30 days regarding any necessary follow-up actions to secure the land for the city.
Councilwoman Rodriguez explained that the community was promised a new fire station many years ago, as part of previous funding allocations. However, due to some unscrupulous individuals and a developer not fulfilling their commitment to make the property available at the designated location, it has taken six years of negotiations to finally acquire the parcel of land for the fire station in Sylmar. Rodriguez expressed satisfaction that the community will finally have a fire station after such a long wait.
She also mentioned that this issue dates back to when Sen. Alex Padilla represented the district from 1999 to 2006. Rodriguez emphasized that the steps taken by the council are a significant move towards fulfilling the long-overdue commitment to fill the service gap in Sylmar with a new fire station.
