Belfast native Gareth Reid (49) has been awarded the title of “Portrait Artist of the Decade” on the renowned competition show, Portrait Artist of the Year, by Sky. This recognition was given as part of a 90-minute special celebrating the show’s 10th anniversary.
The episode paid tribute to previous winners and challenged them to create a portrait of Dame Judi Dench, who is known for her role in the James Bond films.
Reid expressed his surprise and joy at winning the award, describing it as a “truly memorable experience.” He stated, “It still feels completely surreal to be awarded Portrait Artist of the Decade. I was utterly shocked when my name was read out, I expected nothing, so I feel extremely fortunate and honoured to have been chosen.” The episode will be aired on Sky on October 11.
In 2017, Reid previously won the Sky Portrait Artist of the Year, triumphing over 54 other competitors. His winning portrait of Graham Norton is now proudly displayed in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.
Since his victory, Reid has received several prestigious commissions, including a portrait of King Charles in 2019. Reflecting on his achievements, he said, “Winning the first time was already extraordinary, but this is way beyond that.”
Reid’s award-winning drawing will be showcased in an upcoming exhibition at The National Portrait Gallery in London.
His artistic journey began in Belfast, where he honed his skills before attending the prestigious Glasgow School of Art. Currently, he divides his time between studios in Ireland and Glasgow.
Reid’s latest works will be featured as part of a group exhibition at La Roche House in Belfast. The exhibition will run from October 17 to 31 and can be viewed by appointment.
Recalling the competition, Reid expressed his gratitude for the experience, particularly having his daughters present. He added, “Working under pressure alongside such a great group of talented artists on the day was an experience that I’ll never forget.”
