WASHINGTON — Republican leaders unexpectedly removed two prominent Democrats from their long-standing Capitol hideaway offices after Kevin McCarthy was ousted as House speaker.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former Majority Leader Steny Hoyer were informed that their cherished secondary offices in the Capitol will be “re-assigned,” as confirmed by NBC News.

Spokespeople for McCarthy and the interim speaker, Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., did not respond immediately to inquiries about the reason behind the evictions.

Pelosi, who still holds her district seat in California, received the eviction notice while traveling to San Francisco for the funeral of her close friend, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who passed away on Friday.

This departure from tradition occurred after Democrats joined forces with eight rebellious Republicans on Tuesday to remove McCarthy as speaker.

“One of the initial actions taken by the new Speaker Pro Tempore was to order me to vacate my office in the Capitol without delay,” Pelosi stated on Tuesday night.

“Regrettably, due to my presence in California to mourn and honor the memory of my dear friend Dianne Feinstein, I am currently unable to retrieve my belongings.”

Pelosi pointed out that when she first became speaker, she offered her predecessor, former Republican Rep. Dennis Hastert of Illinois, a large suite of offices in the Capitol for his use as long as he needed.

“Office space isn’t a concern for me, but apparently it matters to them,” she mentioned on Tuesday.

These Capitol hideaway offices, seen as privileges, are assigned by the ruling party to leaders on both sides of the aisle.

Despite losing their hideaway spaces, both Pelosi and Hoyer will keep their spacious congressional offices in the Longworth House Office Building.

Republican lawmakers are furious with Democrats for aligning with the conservative faction and their leader, Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, in his motion to remove McCarthy as speaker.

Gaetz, a long-time adversary of McCarthy, is often seen by numerous rank-and-file Republicans as more focused on grabbing attention than on legislating.
