SAG-AFTRA and Hollywood Studios Resume Negotiations with Exciting Updates; In-Depth Talks on Wednesday

After SAG-AFTRA, the actors union, went on strike in mid-July, negotiators for the union and the major Hollywood studios have met for the first time and plan to resume talks on Wednesday. The goal is to get scripted film and TV productions back on track.

The initial negotiating session on Monday lasted a full day, but no details were released. In a social media statement, SAG-AFTRA leaders urged their members to continue showing support on picket lines and solidarity events around the country.

Last week, the union announced its decision to resume talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), the organization representing the studios. AMPTP executives were expected to attend the negotiations.

The four studio executives known as the “Gang of Four” – Donna Langley of NBCUniversal, David Zaslav of Warner Bros Discovery, Ted Sarandos of Netflix, and Bob Iger of Disney – had been present in the final negotiating sessions with the Writers Guild of America union, but their attendance at Monday’s talks was unclear.

The writers’ strike, which began on May 2, ended officially on Wednesday after union leaders endorsed a tentative contract deal. The Writers Guild of America is currently conducting a ratification vote, which will continue until next Monday.

The actors’ strike started in mid-July and shares many of the same issues as the writers’ strike, including residual formulas for streamed content and protections against the use of artificial intelligence.

While the Writers Guild of America and the AMPTP were able to reach a tentative deal, SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP had not officially met until Monday. SAG-AFTRA represents approximately 160,000 actors and has a list of demands, including wage increases, protections against the use of AI-generated actor images, improved compensation for successful streaming programs, and better health and retirement benefits.

The writers’ deal includes increases in minimum salaries, health and pension contributions, along with restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence in writing and rewriting literary material. It also introduces a new residual formula for streaming programs and guarantees employment for a specific number of writers on TV series.

Some aspects of the writers’ deal may be used as a basis for negotiations with actors, although SAG-AFTRA’s demands differ in certain areas, particularly in the level of wage increases.
