2024 BMW i5 First Drive Review: Unleashing the Power of Electric Mobility

Lisbon, Portugal – A decade ago, I took my first drive along Portugal’s N247 coast road. It’s a stunning route, despite its boring name. At that time, I was testing BMW’s new ActiveHybrid 5, which marked the beginning of BMW’s foray into electrification for its mid-size sedans. Fast forward to 2023, and I find myself back on the N247 in a 5 Series, but this time, it’s fully electric.

The story of BMW’s eighth-generation 5 Series starts with the 2024 i5. Unlike the iX SUV, the i5 is not a one-off electric vehicle on a dedicated platform. Instead, it shares the same foundation as its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterparts, accommodating various powertrain options. Visually, the i5 blends in seamlessly with the gas-powered models, for which we are thankful, as its predecessor was considered quite unattractive.

2024 BMW i5 eDrive40 Quick Specs:
– Motor: Single Permanent-Magnet Synchronous
– Output: 335 Horsepower / 295 Pound-Feet
– Battery: 81.2 Kilowatt-Hour Lithium-Ion
– Charge Type: 205 Kilowatts DC
– Range: 295 Miles
– Base Price: $66,800 + $995 Destination

In the US, two i5 variants will be available: the eDrive40, a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive version, and the M60 xDrive, a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive model. Both feature an 81.2 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery and can accept DC fast-charging speeds of up to 205 kilowatts. The eDrive40 produces 335 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, propelling the sedan from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds, just like its predecessor. The EPA estimates a maximum range of 295 miles for this model.
On the other hand, the M60 xDrive offers a whopping 593 horsepower and 586 pound-feet of torque. Although its range is slightly reduced to an estimated 256 miles, the added power leads to a 0-60 mph time of just 3.7 seconds.

Regardless of power output, the i5 delivers a smooth and comfortable driving experience on the highway, while remaining agile on narrow B-roads. The prototypes I tested earlier in the year left a positive impression, and it seems little has changed in terms of dynamics. The i5’s rear air suspension ensures a comfortable ride, while the front double-wishbone setup keeps the sedan’s handling in check.

All i5 models offer rear-axle steering, assisting with maneuverability through hairpin turns. The M60 xDrive also benefits from the 5 Series’ 48-volt active anti-roll technology, enhancing stability during spirited driving. Regenerative braking plays a vital role in managing energy in the i5, with different levels of regen available. I recommend using the “B” mode for maximum regen and disabling the adaptive recuperation feature for consistent brake feel.

One of the standout features of the i5 is the ability to drive hands-free on pre-mapped highways using BMW’s Highway Assistant. Unlike some similar systems, making minor corrections won’t disengage the system. Furthermore, the i5 introduces gesture-based lane changes, where the system suggests a lane change and all the driver has to do is glance at the appropriate side mirror to activate the maneuver.

Inside the i5, attention is paid to the smallest details, such as contrast stitching on the vegan upholstery, backlit ambient lighting, and glass controls on the center console. Two individually carved-out smartphone slots on the wireless charging pad prevent any arguments over charging space. The interior is dominated by a single curved display combining a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 14.9-inch multimedia touchscreen. The updated iDrive 8.5 infotainment system features a row of feature buttons along the bottom for easy access to common functions.

An interesting addition to the i5 is AirConsole, a feature that allows passengers to play video games on the central display when parked. Up to seven people can connect and play on AirConsole, adding some entertainment while charging. A QR code on your phone grants access to ten different games.

The 2024 i5 eDrive40 will start at $67,795 (including $995 destination charge) and will be available for purchase in the fall. This puts it at a lower price point than its competitors, the Mercedes-Benz EQE 350+ and Tesla Model S. The i5 M60 xDrive, with a starting price of $85,095, offers even more power while still undercutting the competition. Personally, I prefer the eDrive40 with its sleek design and more affordable price-tag. With the right options, a well-equipped i5 eDrive40 can be purchased for around $75,000.

The 5 Series lineup continues to evolve with the i5 leading the charge into the electric future.
