Representative Matt Gaetz recently made a bold statement, threatening to remove Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his House leadership position if McCarthy worked with Democrats to pass a continuing resolution to avoid a government shutdown. McCarthy ignored the threat and proceeded to pass the resolution through the House and sent it to President Biden for approval. Gaetz, true to his word, announced that he will indeed follow through with his motion to remove McCarthy from his post. McCarthy seemed unfazed by Gaetz’s threats, stating that he has been dealing with them ever since he entered office. “I’ll survive,” McCarthy confidently responded. Gaetz alleges that McCarthy failed to fulfill promises made to secure support from Gaetz’s House faction during his run for speaker. According to the New York Times, Gaetz claims that McCarthy made a “secret deal” with Democrats regarding aid to Ukraine, a deal that Gaetz and his GOP group oppose. This issue was not included in the resolution passed over the weekend, fueling Gaetz’s distrust towards McCarthy. “Nobody trusts Kevin McCarthy,” Gaetz asserted.
If Democrats join Gaetz in supporting McCarthy’s removal, it would only require a few Republican votes to be successful. So far, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has not indicated which way he leans on the matter. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez suggested that Democrats should not offer their support freely, as reported by the Hill. Gaetz, displaying his determination, promised not to give up easily, describing himself as relentless. In response, McCarthy stated, “This is personal with Matt,” and another GOP colleague echoed this sentiment, accusing Gaetz of spouting a “diatribe of delusional thinking.” Representative Mike Lawler of New York emphasized the need for teamwork within the GOP, stating, “We have to work together as a team” (USA Today).
