True to the Core: Engaging Perspectives from Inquirer Opinion

Suntory, the renowned Japanese whiskey brand, has an interesting backstory behind its name. Legend has it that the founder of Suntory had three sons, which inspired the name. The combination of “sun” and “tory” represents the founder’s desire to create a brand that would shine brightly in the whiskey industry.

In today’s Gospel passage from Matthew 21:28-32, Jesus shares a parable about a man who asked his two sons to work in the vineyard. The first son initially refused, but later changed his mind and went to work. The second son agreed to work but didn’t follow through. Jesus asks, “Who did the Father’s will?” The answer is the first son who followed through on his commitment.

Today, let us reflect on the promises we have made to the Lord. How often have we said “yes” to God but failed to follow through with our actions? It’s important that we don’t give up and continue striving to align our thoughts, words, and deeds with our faith.

Today, we also take a moment to honor those individuals who act quietly but love wholeheartedly. These people are an inspiration to us because they “just do it” without seeking recognition or applause. Let us express our gratitude for those who embody honesty and truthfulness.

Interestingly, there is a third son in the parable that often goes overlooked. This son never listened, ignored the Father’s call to work, and cared only about their own pleasure and self-fulfillment. Their life revolves around recreation and vacation, prioritizing their personal agenda over God’s mission.

What are the four “Ps” that prevent us from listening to God and working for Him?

1. Pera (Money): The love of money can lead us to disregard God’s call to love and serve others. When we prioritize material wealth, we become vain, proud, and empty.

2. Power: Becoming consumed with surpassing others in wealth, intelligence, or holiness can lead to selfishness and pride. It’s important to remember our purpose and mission rather than comparing ourselves to others.

3. Pride: Humility and obedience to God’s Word can protect us from falling into the sin of pride. Foolish pride is a downfall for those who forget, deny, or rebel against God.

4. Pleasure: When we prioritize worldly pleasures and attachments, we become deaf to God’s call and disobey His commandments. Without discipline, sacrifice, and self-denial in our lives, we make ourselves gods.

There is one more “P” that hinders our ability to listen and obey God, and that is politics. Corrupt and manipulative politics, disguised as “public service,” can divide and corrupt us. Let us stand against politics driven by guns, goons, and gold, and embrace politics guided by God, goodness, and courage.

As I celebrate my 70th year, I express my gratitude to the Lord for all that has been and respond with a resounding “yes” to all that lies ahead. May God continue to bless and prosper the work of my hands, but above all, may He increase the love in my heart. I am grateful and joyful at 70.

A moment with the Lord: Lord, guide us to be sincere in our thoughts, words, and deeds. Amen.
