During a recent briefing with General Sir Patrick Sanders, the Chief of the General Staff, and other senior personnel at Salisbury Plain, Mr. Shapps expressed his plans to bring training closer to Ukraine. He stated, “I was talking today about eventually getting the training brought closer and actually into Ukraine as well.”
Mr. Shapps further emphasized the importance of expanding operations within Ukraine, particularly in the western region of the country. He stated, “The opportunity now is to bring more things ‘in country’, and not just training but also we’re seeing BAE, the UK defence firm, move into manufacturing in the country. I’m keen to see other British companies follow suit and contribute in the same way. So, I think there will be a move to get more training and production in the country.”
Additionally, during discussions with President Zelensky, Mr. Shapps assured him of the UK’s steadfast support, stating, “We will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine.” He also hinted at Britain’s potential involvement in helping Ukraine defend against attacks in the Black Sea, where Russia has been increasingly targeting cargo ships carrying grain.
As the newly appointed Defence Secretary, Mr. Shapps highlighted Britain’s naval capabilities and its ability to provide assistance and advice. He stated, “We’ve seen recent developments in the Black Sea, in Crimea, and as a naval nation, Britain can help and advise, especially since the water is international. It’s important to ensure that international shipping is not restricted in that area. So, I believe there are numerous ways in which Britain can provide guidance. I discussed this with President Zelensky and other officials this week.”
