In Hangzhou, China, Nesthy Petecio’s Olympic qualifying journey ended in disappointment. However, instead of giving up, Petecio’s determination has only grown stronger.

“I’m not finished yet. I will continue to fight, and this experience will motivate me even more,” said Petecio in Filipino.

Her opponent, Lin Yu-ting from Taiwan, took advantage of her height and reach, avenging her previous loss to Petecio in the Tokyo Olympics and eliminating the Filipino boxer in the women’s 57kg category.

Unfortunately, Petecio’s loss also means she missed the chance to secure a spot in the upcoming Paris Olympics. However, she still has two more qualification tournaments ahead to pursue her dream of returning to the Olympics after falling short in Tokyo.

“There will be changes in my training as we address certain areas that need improvement,” Petecio stated.

Her first opportunity for redemption will be the 2024 World Qualification Tournament 1 in Busto Arsizio, Italy, from February 29 to March 12. The tournament’s finalists will earn tickets to Paris. If Petecio fails to secure a spot there, her last chance will be the World Qualification Tournament 2 in Bangkok, Thailand, from May 23 to June 5.

The Thai capital offers four more Olympic berths before the qualification window closes.

Chairman Ricky Vargas of the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines expressed his support for Petecio’s journey and sent her a reassuring message.

“I believe in you. You have proven that you can achieve great things, and I know you can bounce back from this setback,” Vargas said.
