Discovering a seal pup curled up on your doorstep is far more adorable than receiving an Amazon package.
A heartwarming incident took place in Wellington, New Zealand, where a family returned home to find a fuzzy fur seal pup peacefully napping outside their front door. According to a Tuesday Facebook post by the country’s Department of Conservation, this adorable surprise unfolded.
The department wrote, “It’s not every day you come home to find a seal curled up on your front porch, but during ✨seal silly season✨ you never know where these adventurous animals might pop up!”
Apparently, the young seal had embarked on quite a journey to reach its cozy napping spot. It had to navigate climbing up seawall stairs, crossing a road, hiking up a footpath and a driveway, and ultimately conquering another set of stairs.
The New Zealand fur seal, also known as kekeno, can be spotted all along the country’s coastline and on nearby islands. After being hunted nearly to extinction in previous centuries, these marine mammals have made a remarkable comeback, with their population exceeding 200,000 seals, as reported by The Guardian last year.
Responding to a commenter’s query about the seal’s mother, the department explained that the young seal had likely already been weaned and that this time of year, seals often explore the world and end up in unexpected places.
During the months of May to September, it is common to spot young seals “out and about” in New Zealand. The department advises people not to disturb or interfere with them. If a seal is in poor condition, entangled in fishing line, or in danger from cars, dogs, or humans, or if it is on someone’s property, New Zealanders are encouraged to call the department’s hotline for assistance.
In this particular case, the department decided to relocate the seal “further around the coast to a safe place,” away from potential threats such as traffic and dogs.
