The launch of Australian singer Kylie Minogue’s 16th studio album “Tension” last week was one of the most highly anticipated releases this year, evident from the viral memes that emerged after the release of the first single “Padam Padam”. The catchy single was released in mid-May and quickly became the unofficial anthem for Pride events worldwide in the following month.
On platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, fans eagerly filmed themselves imitating the dance moves from the music video, which has accumulated more than 18 million views in just four months. Even Kylie herself was astonished by the immense popularity of “Padam Padam” in such a short period of time. In an interview with TV host Andy Cohen, the eternally youthful 55-year-old singer shared, “You dare to dream of something like that… that’s going to hit immediately and just keep growing. I feel like it’s not mine anymore, it’s become the people’s song.”
In early September, the second single and title track of the album were released. “Tension” features an infectious beat and was co-written with British songwriter Kamille, who also lent her writing talents to the track “Things We Do for Love”.
Since its release on September 22, I’ve had “Tension” on repeat for the entire weekend. However, compared to Kylie’s previous studio album “Disco,” which offered a consistent stream of danceable hits like “Magic,” “Miss A Thing,” “Where Does the DJ Go?,” “Celebrate You,” and “Real Groove,” “Tension” feels slightly uneven.
Notable Tracks
Among the tracks on the new album, the ones that stand out for their addictive qualities are the two singles, followed by “One More Time,” “Green Light,” and “Love Train.” These are classic examples of Kylie doing what she does best—delivering light-hearted and catchy pop tracks that get stuck in your head.
For instance, in the song “Love Train,” she sings: “All aboard my love train / I can take you to the moon in the fast lane / I need a passenger, baby, don’t wait / Yeah you better buckle up, it’s a beautiful view.”
