The Boston Red Sox reveal that Tim Wakefield is currently undergoing treatment for an undisclosed illness. They kindly request fans to respect the former pitcher’s privacy, as his condition was shared without his consent by former teammate Curt Schilling.
After Schilling discussed Wakefield’s health on a podcast, the Red Sox promptly released a statement. This led to an outpouring of support for Wakefield, but also criticism directed towards Schilling.
“We acknowledge the comments and concerns regarding Tim and Stacy Wakefield’s wellbeing,” stated the Red Sox. “Regrettably, this private information has been made public without their permission. As they undertake treatment and face this illness, they consider their health to be an intensely personal matter. Tim and Stacy are grateful for the support and affection they have always received, and kindly ask for privacy during this time.”
Having retired in 2012 with a 200-192 record and a 4.41 ERA in over 3,000 major league innings, 57-year-old Wakefield played a significant role in Boston’s World Series victories in 2004 and 2007. In 2016, he was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame as a knuckleballer.
In addition to his baseball career, Wakefield has been associated with NESN, the Red Sox broadcast network, since 2012. He has also remained actively involved in various Boston charities, including the Red Sox Foundation.
Retiring in 2009, Schilling was Wakefield’s teammate from 2004 to 2007 and worked as an analyst for ESPN until 2016 when he was terminated due to his anti-transgender social media posts.
Schilling himself was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, claiming later on that it was in remission. Although he was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2012, he fell short of entering the national Baseball Hall of Fame in 2022, as he accrued only 58.6% of the vote, far from the required 75%.
