Elon Musk has weighed in on the recent wave of looting in Philadelphia, comparing it to scenes from the movie Joker and suggesting that “America is going full Joker.” Musk referred to an amateur video showing a group of young people stealing and vandalizing retail shops including Apple, Lululemon, and Foot Locker in the City Center district. The Tesla CEO’s comment comes amidst his criticism of the crime situation in San Francisco, where his social media company X is based. Musk recently pledged to donate $100,000 to support efforts to remove Dean Preston, a progressive member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, whom he blames for the city’s decline.
According to a report by the National Retail Federation, cities like San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, and Houston have experienced a surge in organized crime, leading to significant financial losses for businesses. In 2022 alone, these crime rings cost companies $112.1 billion, a notable increase from the previous year.
The situation in San Francisco has been particularly challenging, with a rise in crime, homelessness, and drug use. This has led to companies relocating away from the Bay Area, including Target, which is closing nine store locations nationwide due to theft and violence, including one in Harlem.
“Retailers are seeing unprecedented levels of theft coupled with rampant crime in their stores, and the situation is only becoming more dire,” said NRF Vice President for Asset Protection and Retail Operations David Johnston.
