Revealed: The UK Cities with the Fastest and Slowest Broadband Speeds
Canterbury has the slowest average speeds while Belfast boasts the fastest connections
We’ve all experienced the frustration of slow broadband speeds when trying to download a movie or stream a song. For many people in the UK, this is an ongoing issue. However, new figures from Broadband Genie shed light on which cities have the worst connections.
Broadband Genie analyzed 265,572 consumer speed tests from across the UK and found that Canterbury ranked at the bottom of the list with an average speed of just 34.4Mb. Ripon and Chester closely followed as the cities with the slowest average speeds. On the other hand, Belfast, Portsmouth, and Milton Keynes emerged as the cities enjoying the fastest average speeds.
‘No broadband customer should settle for a subpar service, especially during a year that has seen record price hikes in the industry,’ said Alex Tofts, broadband expert at Broadband Genie.
The study also revealed that Halkirk in Caithness is the slowest area in the UK, with residents experiencing average speeds of only 2.8Mb. In contrast, Lochwinnoch in Renfrewshire boasts the fastest broadband speeds in the country, with an impressive average of 409Mb per household.
‘Most of Britain’s major providers adhere to Ofcom’s Broadband Speeds Code of Practice,’ added Mr. Tofts. ‘This means they have to be transparent about the speeds customers can expect at their addresses, including a guaranteed minimum speed. Regularly conducting speed tests can help monitor performance and address any issues with the provider.’
Factors outside the provider’s control, such as poor home wiring or a faulty router, can also impact broadband speed. Switching to a faster provider may be a viable solution for residents in cities with slow connections.
If you’re out of contract and considering upgrading your broadband, it’s advisable to compare deals online to find the best options. You might discover a better and faster service at a lower cost.
