Qantas pilots are demanding the resignation of the airline’s chairman, citing record-low pilot morale.
The Australian and International Pilots Association (AIPA), which represents the majority of Qantas pilots, has sent a letter to Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson calling for a change in leadership.
In the letter, the union emphasizes the urgent need for a cultural reset within the airline.
AIPA President Tony Lucas specifically requests the resignation of Chairman Richard Goyder, accusing him of overseeing a series of damaging events in Qantas’ history.
Mr. Lucas states, “Richard Goyder has presided over one of the most detrimental periods in Qantas history, including the illegal dismissal of 1,700 employees, allegations of improper marketing of canceled flights, and a poorly managed return to operations after COVID-19.”

Mr. Lucas further addresses the current state of pilot morale, saying, “The morale of Qantas pilots has never been lower. We have completely lost confidence in Goyder and his board.”
Reflecting on the need for a culture reset, Mr. Lucas questions how this can be achieved under Chairman Goyder’s leadership.
The union president criticizes Mr. Goyder for accepting a nearly $100,000 pay raise while expecting staff to accept a two-year wage freeze, describing him as “galling and tone-deaf.”
Mr. Lucas concludes, “For our great national carrier to thrive, it needs leadership from a board that recognizes the value of its employees, respects its customers, and can regain the trust of the nation.”

This is the first time in the union’s history that a call for a chairman to step down has been made, highlighting the airline’s mishandled recovery from the Covid-19 shutdown and a series of poor decisions.
Recent months have been tumultuous for Qantas, with former CEO Alan Joyce leaving his position early.
The Australian Consumer Watchdog has also called for a $250 million fine against Qantas for allegedly selling tickets for flights that had already been canceled.
Furthermore, the airline lost a significant case in the High Court, where it was found to have illegally dismissed nearly 1,700 workers during the pandemic.
