New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy Urges Senator Menendez to Resign Amid Indictment

Democratic Governor of New Jersey Calls for Senator Menendez’s Resignation Following Federal Indictment

Democratic New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has urged Senator Bob Menendez, a fellow Democrat from New Jersey, to resign after being indicted on federal charges. U.S. Attorney Damian Williams made the announcement during a press conference on Friday morning. The indictment includes three counts and charges Senator Menendez, his wife Nadine Menendez, and three New Jersey businessmen, Wael Hana, Jose Uribe, and Fred Daibes, with bribery offenses. According to the indictment, the couple accepted bribes to use Senator Menendez’s influence and power to benefit the businessmen and the Arab Republic of Egypt.

The alleged bribes mentioned in the indictment include gold bars, cash, mortgage payments, compensation for a low-or-no-show job, a luxury car, and other valuable items. In 2020, Menendez disclosed that his family had received gold bars.

The indictment accuses Menendez and his wife of engaging in a corrupt relationship with the three businessmen from 2018 to 2022. Governor Murphy released a statement expressing his concern over the allegations and called for Menendez’s immediate resignation. He emphasized the seriousness of the charges, which implicate national security and the integrity of the criminal justice system.

Senator Menendez responded to the calls for resignation, stating that he intends to continue fighting for the people of New Jersey. He emphasized the importance of the presumption of innocence and criticized the prosecutors for misrepresenting the normal work of a congressional office.

Prosecutors allege that Menendez provided sensitive U.S. government information to businessman Wael Hana, who allegedly aided the Government of Egypt secretly. They claim that Menendez pressured a Department of Agriculture official to protect Hana’s business monopoly granted by Egypt and received profits in return.
