  • A model and fashion influencer defended skinny jeans with various styling examples.

In the face of growing criticism from Gen Z, one model and fashion influencer has stepped forward to defend skinny jeans and challenge those who have dismissed the style.

Skinny jeans have been a topic of contention for years, particularly online, as some members of Gen Z have abandoned the tight-fitting pants in favor of looser, straight-leg or oversized options. This shift in fashion preferences has caused anxiety among some millennials who still embrace the skinny jean trend.

A recent viral TikTok posted on September 4 by VIAVIA, a fashion retail platform targeting Gen Z, added fuel to the debate by asking individuals which fashion trend they believed “absolutely needs to die.” The video received significant attention as multiple interviewees passionately criticized skinny jeans as the biggest fashion faux pas. They recommended opting for baggier styles, particularly when thrifting, and expressed disapproval of skinny jeans on men.

The video garnered 2.1 million views and over 5,800 comments, with many commenters identifying as millennials holding onto skinny jeans as a staple of their wardrobe.

On September 19, model and fashion influencer Wisdom Kaye, with a following of 9.2 million on TikTok, directly addressed the viral video. Kaye stitched VIAVIA’s upload and then showcased himself wearing a pair of black skinny jeans and black boots. He proceeded to pose in various outfits featuring different types of skinny trousers, such as leather and gray pairs.

The video received 2.3 million views and over 8,500 comments, with many supporting the inclusion of skinny jeans. Kaye didn’t stop there; he also uploaded the same clip to X (formerly Twitter), where it garnered an additional 9.7 million views.

Beneath the video, Kaye clarified that he defended skinny jeans not because he loves them but because he believes the hate towards them is unwarranted. He argued that people claim you can’t look good in skinny jeans, but he disagrees, stating that the issue lies in how they are styled rather than the jeans themselves. Moreover, he remarked that hating on skinny jeans for being outdated is in itself outdated.

Many commenters agreed that it’s all about how you style the jeans, rather than the jeans themselves being the problem. Others expressed confusion about the intense dislike for skinny jeans or suspected that some people are simply pretending to dislike them to follow the trend.

Meanwhile, on TikTok, some viewers pointed out that baggy clothing was already a popular trend in the 1990s. They suggested that those solely embracing loose-fitting clothes to stay on-trend might end up changing their minds if tighter fits become fashionable again.

One viewer commented beneath Kaye’s video, “All the people hating on skinny jeans are gonna be the first to jump on them as soon as they’re trendy again.”

The evolution of fashion trends has been a hot topic in recent years, with early-2000s fashion becoming popular among Gen Z. This cycle has surprised many millennials who remember the styles’ original popularity. Some millennials may even be holding onto their skinny jeans in anticipation of their resurgence.
