Originally exclusive to Tesla, the NACS connector has gained immense popularity throughout the United States due to its compact size, lack of moving parts, and superior power compared to the Combined Charging System (CCS).
As part of Tesla’s effort to promote electric vehicle adoption, the company opened up its charging standard last year, providing design and specification files for the NACS connector. This move has allowed other automakers to access Tesla Superchargers without the need to build and maintain their own charging networks.
While some competitors are teaming up to create a rival charging network supporting both CCS and NACS charging, Tesla remains the go-to option in the U.S. market. However, companies like Jaguar are eager to tap into Tesla’s charging network to expand their EV reach. The adoption of a standardized charging standard across all automakers could ultimately address one of the biggest challenges for electric vehicles.
