Marck Espejo, the Philippines’ volleyball star, expressed dissatisfaction with his performance at the Asian Games. However, he commended his teammates for their outstanding performance throughout the team’s short yet successful campaign in Hangzhou, China.

Despite playing limited minutes, Espejo only managed to score a total of 22 points in three games. He attributed his lackluster performance to his late arrival, which affected his connection and familiarity with the team.

Espejo admitted, “I’m not satisfied with my performance since I haven’t been with the team. I was in Korea before coming here, and I guess I lost my connection and familiarity with the team.”

The Incheon Korean Air Jumbos, who joined the national team for the season, arrived on Sunday from South Korea. Despite his limited preparation, Espejo expressed pride in his teammates, particularly Bryan Bagunas, Steve Rotter, and Jau Umandal, for their efforts.

“I’m proud of this team because I saw improvement in their performance,” Espejo said.

Although the Philippine team did not face Japan’s top players, who won bronze in the Volleyball Nations League, Espejo still cherished the experience of playing against the world’s fifth-ranked country.

“Even though we faced Japan’s Team B, Japan is Japan. Although our skills may not be on par with theirs yet, I believe there will come a time when we can compete against top international teams,” Espejo remarked.

Despite facing struggles, Espejo will carry the learnings and honor of representing the country in the Asian Games as he heads to South Korea for his debut in the Korean V-League. This will be his fourth overseas stint following his appearances in Japan, Thailand, and Bahrain.

“I’m very thankful for the opportunity to represent Philippine men’s volleyball in the Asian Games. I hope this continues in the coming years,” Espejo expressed.
