The US singer-songwriter, Sufjan Stevens, aged 48, gained recognition in 2017 with an Oscar nomination for the music and lyrics of “Mystery Of Love” from the romantic drama “Call Me By Your Name”. Known for his diverse music styles including folk, baroque pop, and electronica, Stevens also received a Grammy nomination for the same piece of music.
In a recent Instagram post, Stevens revealed that he has been unable to promote his new album, Javelin, due to health issues. In August, he experienced mobility problems and was subsequently hospitalized. Stevens described feeling numbness, tingling, and loss of strength in his hands, arms, and legs, and was eventually diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder called Guillain-Barré Syndrome. He underwent treatment in the form of immuno-hemoglobin infusions for five days, to prevent the disease from spreading to vital organs. Grateful for the doctors’ care, Stevens acknowledged their role in saving his life during the two weeks he spent in bed, kept stable and alive.
Guillain-Barré Syndrome is a potentially life-threatening condition that primarily affects the limbs, causing numbness, weakness, and pain, according to the NHS. Currently, Sufjan Stevens is undergoing rehabilitation and physical therapy as he relearns how to walk. He remains hopeful, as most patients with GBS regain their ability to walk within a year. Despite being in just the second week of rehab, Stevens is determined to make progress and expresses his gratitude for the supportive team around him.
Stevens concludes his Instagram post by extending his appreciation to those who have sent their thoughts and prayers, as well as the caretakers working tirelessly to help patients heal. He signs off with well wishes and love, while mentioning that he is currently in a wheelchair.
“Call Me By Your Name” delves into the relationship between a young man, portrayed by Timothee Chalamet, and a guest of his parents, played by Armie Hammer. The film received four Academy Award nominations in 2017 and won the award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
