Senate Welcomes Tech Leaders for AI Regulation Talks
The Senate had the privilege of hosting renowned tech entrepreneur Elon Musk and other industry leaders for insightful discussions on regulating artificial intelligence (AI). One of the highlights from the talks was Musk’s revelation regarding the potential introduction of a monthly fee for users of the popular social media platform, X (previously known as Twitter).
During a livestreamed conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Musk emphasized that the purpose of this fee would be to combat the widespread issue of bots plaguing the platform. “It’s the only way I can think of to combat vast armies of bots,” Musk stated. This move would not only enhance user experience but also contribute to minimizing bot activity on the platform.
Musk, known for his innovative ideas and bold propositions, disclosed that X currently boasts an impressive user base of 550 million individuals, generating a staggering 100 to 200 million posts each day. However, he did not clarify whether these figures accounted for bot-generated content.
The timing of the meeting with Netanyahu is noteworthy, as it comes on the heels of Musk’s contemplation of legal action against the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). The billionaire accused the ADL of wrongly accusing him and X of antisemitism, which resulted in an exodus of advertisers from the platform. Musk expressed his opposition to any form of discrimination and hate, stating, “Obviously, I’m against antisemitism. I’m against anti-really anything that promotes hate and conflict.”
While Musk did not provide specific details on the cost associated with using X, he did mention that it would be a nominal amount. “We’re actually going to come up with a lower tier pricing…This is a longer discussion, but in my view, this is actually the only defense against vast armies of bots,” Musk explained. Currently, X offers a premium subscription service with various benefits, such as post editing and preferred rankings in conversations and search, starting at $8 per month.
