Due to the lack of abortion access in Wisconsin over the past 15 months, many patients have traveled to neighboring Illinois, where abortions remain available. Planned Parenthood of Illinois has reported a significant increase in patients from Wisconsin since Roe was overturned.
The legal challenge against Wisconsin’s 1849 abortion law was initiated by the state’s Democratic attorney general and is expected to reach the liberal-controlled Wisconsin Supreme Court.
Democrats, including Governor Tony Evers, have expressed support for the resumption of abortion services. Meanwhile, anti-abortion groups in the state are condemning the decision and pledging to continue their legal efforts to ban the procedure.
