Unleashing ‘Superpower’: A Compelling Review of Sean Penn’s Ukraine War Chronicle

At the beginning of the captivating documentary “Superpower,” actor Sean Penn anticipates the criticism surrounding his previous journeys to conflict zones. Penn acknowledges that his fame grants him access to places and individuals he may not have otherwise encountered.

While it’s true that he has utilized this access to ask softball questions to El Chapo in the past, it’s hard to fault Penn for his mission to chronicle the war in Ukraine, the main focus of this film which Penn co-directed with Aaron Kaufman. It appears that Penn, much like the French intellectual Bernard-Henri Lévy, who has also produced documentaries on the war, is introspective but taking some form of action.

Initially, “Superpower” intended to delve into the unlikely presidency of Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky and his transition from comic actor to politician. The first part of the film extensively features footage compiled by Penn from the preinvasion era, with experts discussing Ukraine’s complex history in the 21st century. Ukrainians offer their reflections on the legacy of the Maidan protests and express doubt regarding Zelensky’s potential.

Penn’s accomplishment comes in the form of an on-camera interview with Zelensky on the day of Russia’s invasion, as well as additional video interviews and a subsequent in-person meeting. Zelensky’s words, expressing his country’s needs and praising his 9-year-old child for their political awareness, may sound familiar but remain profoundly moving. Penn’s expedition to the front lines, while seemingly a test of his courage, also serves as an opportunity to capture the story.
