Deborra-Lee Furness’ Heartwarming Praise for Hugh Jackman Resurfaces as They Announce Shocking Split, Ending 27 Years of Marriage

In February 2022, the Australian actor spoke admirably about her spouse to Page Six, while attending the Broadway debut of The Music Man revival featuring the X-Men star. As she assisted her husband in memorizing his lines, she remarked, “Yeah, we do everything together.”

She specifically emphasized that there was nothing “annoying” about Jackman, stating that his reputation as a kind-hearted celebrity was genuine, not a façade. However, it appears that even seemingly stable couples like Jackman and Furness can experience turmoil in their relationship. Over a year after her positive comments, the couple released a joint statement to People on September 15, announcing their separation.

“We have been fortunate to spend nearly three decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage. Our journey is now changing, and we have chosen to separate in order to pursue our individual growth,” the couple stated.

“Our family has always been and will continue to be our top priority. We embark on this next chapter with gratitude, love, and kindness. We deeply appreciate your understanding and respect for our privacy as our family navigates this transition in our lives,” they added.

The statement was signed by “Deb and Hugh Jackman,” concluding with the message that it would be their only public statement on the matter.

Having been married for over 27 years, the Australian couple shares two children: Oscar, 23, and Ava, 18. Furness expressed her deep appreciation for family in a November 2020 interview with People, stating, “Family, to me, means feeling safe.”

She added, “I always say, ‘Everyone needs to know that they are precious.’ So, with family, you always have the assurance that you are important in someone else’s life.”

During the production of the Australian TV series Corelli, Furness, an established actress and 13 years older than Jackman, met the recent drama school graduate. They quickly fell deeply in love and married less than a year later, on April 11, 1996.

In a 2017 interview with People, Jackman fondly recalled their first meeting, stating, “Deb, she was a big star… I get in the car and Deb is in the front seat. I’ll never forget.”

He continued, “She took off her seatbelt, turned around, removed her sunglasses, and said, ‘Hi, I’m Deborra-Lee Furness, nice to meet you.’ I remember thinking, ‘I like this girl.'”

For Jackman, it was love at first sight. He admitted, “I knew very early, I knew before Deb knew. Even when she tried to break up with me, I knew… She kind of [broke up with me], a little bit. Early on, three weeks in. I managed to talk her out of it, thank God.”

He added, “I’m a very indecisive person, and Deb knows this about me. I can count on one hand the number of times in my life something has felt that clear to me, and when it happens, it’s such a relief.”

The couple’s most recent public appearances were at the Met Gala in May, where they wore outfits paying tribute to the late Karl Lagerfeld, and at the men’s finals at Wimbledon in July.
