are out: Marks & Spencer switches to eco-friendly paper bags

Marks & Spencer has made the switch from plastic bags for life to paper carrier bags in an effort to reduce its environmental impact.

The retailer, known for its food and clothing, now offers Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper bags in all of its UK stores.

Customers can choose between a strong and robust bag for carrying their groceries and a simpler option for clothing purchases.

These bags can carry over 15kg or six four-pint bottles of milk, and can be reused more than 100 times, according to the company.

Made with a natural resin during the manufacturing process, they are also water resistant and can be easily folded into a backpack or placed in home recycling bins.

A team from the University of Sheffield conducted an environmental assessment of these bags, which are produced using renewable energy at a hydro-powered paper mill in Scandinavia.

Victoria McKenzie-Gould, the director of corporate affairs at M&S, stated in a blog post, “We now have an environmentally-friendly solution that supports customers in their efforts to reduce their environmental footprint.”
